山林のラウンジ
ARUYO ODAWARA LOUNGE
かまぼこに代表されるような海産物の街として認識されている神奈川県小田原市には、約4,000haの山林があり市域の約40%を占めているが、誰もがそのように認識していない。
Kanagawa Prefecture's Odawara City is widely known as a town of seafood, famously represented by kamaboko (a type of steamed fish cake), yet it also boasts approximately 4,000 hectares of mountainous forest, which accounts for about 40% of the city’s area—though few recognise it as such.
このプロジェクトは、さまざまな人の出会いや交流を図るための街に開いた小田原のコワークスペースのカフェ、バーラウンジを作ることである。この施設は、小田原市を中心とした起業家の起業支援を行うことや、出会いと発見を創出することを主な目的とし、神奈川県、小田原市から補助金と小田原の財団で運営している。
This project aims to create a café and bar lounge within a co-working space in Odawara, open to the community, allowing encounters and exchanges for everybody. The facility’s primary purpose is to support entrepreneurs based in Odawara and surrounding areas, while also creating opportunities for connections and discoveries. It is funded by grants from Kanagawa Prefecture and Odawara City, and operated by a foundation based in Odawara.
そのため、小田原にこだわり地場の材料、特に山林資材を使うこととした。一方で、私たち建築の人間が山林を保護する方法として、伐採をした資源を建材として生かす一つの方法が考えられる。
To achieve this, we decided to focus on using local materials from Odawara, particularly forest resources. At the same time, as architects, one way we can contribute to the protection of forests is by utilising fallen timber as a building material, giving it a new life and purpose.
そのため運営側と設計が同じ地場の山林資材を使うという考えのもとラウンジを作り、たくさんの人に小田原の材料を知ってもらうことを目的とした。地場産の木材は、地場で加工し天井材、カウンター材、建具、机などの家具に使用した。床の左官は山林から採取し、三和土とするなど徹底的に地場産にこだわった。
With the shared goal of using local forest materials, we designed the lounge in collaboration with the operators to showcase Odawara's resources to a wider audience. Locally sourced timber was processed within the region and used for ceiling panels, counters, fixtures, and furniture such as tables. The flooring, made from plaster sourced directly from the forest, was meticulously crafted into tataki― traditional Japanese earthen floor―, ensuring that every aspect of the design remained rooted in local materials.
ラウンジはワンルーム平面とし、誰もが見渡せ誰がどこにいるか把握しやすいようにした。扉を開けると大きな幹を脚に使った丸テーブルが利用者の目に入り、利用者を驚かせる。
The lounge features an open-plan layout, allowing for clear visibility of the space, making it easy to see where everyone is. Upon entering, a round table with a large tree trunk used as its base immediately catches the eye, offering visitors an element of surprise.
次に、皮付一枚板のカウンターがどんと構える。厚みのある年輪の天板のスタンディングテーブルの質感に驚きながら、利用者はこれらを様々な使い方で使うことで、利用者同士の交流を図る。またシーリングライトが、幅広の杉の天井を照らし山林のラウンジを暖かく照らすことで街を歩いてる人々が立ち寄りたくなる街の公園のような場所を目指した。
Next, a striking counter made from a single slab of wood with its bark intact takes centre stage. The thick, ringed surface of the high table surprises visitors with its texture, encouraging them to interact and use the space in various ways, fostering connections among users. Meanwhile, the ceiling lights illuminate the wide cedar ceiling, casting a warm glow over the lounge, creating a welcoming atmosphere akin to a public park where passersby are drawn to stop and linger.
将来的には森林の農産物が買えたり、身の回りのものが山林の木であったりすることで地域住民の生活の中で山林との結びつきを強めていくための最初のプロジェクトである。
In the future, this project aims to strengthen the connection between the local community and the forest by offering forest-based agricultural products for sale and incorporating forest timber into everyday items. This is the first step towards fostering a deeper bond between the people and the forest in their daily lives.
